Micro-climate

It's supposed to be the sunniest month in San Francisco! But it's been raining and foggy since last week . . . What's wrong with SF? I already miss sunny SoCal. Some locals say that it's unusual to have this kind of weather at this time of the year. However, if the summer is like this foggy, gloomy, dark, and cold, I won't be happy. Is it really a good decision to move to SF from LA?

Another concern is that I've had two bad experiences at Japanese restaurants in SF. I went to Izumiya and Sapporo-ya inside Japan Center (Japan Town). I had miso-marinated cod (gindara no misozuke) at Izumiya and shio (salt) ramen at Sapporo-ya. Both were soooo bad. I realized at Izumiya waitresses were non-Japanese Asian and one chef was latino? At Sapporo-ya, waitresses are old Japanese women and Japanese-looking old chef. But they seem to be some immigrants from Japan 50 years ago and trying to emulate whatever they have eaten in Japan five decades ago without authentic recipe. It was just horrible experience. One of my friends in SF said that there are few good Japanese restaurants in SF, which is unfortunate. I didn't get what he really meant but now I do. That was scary experience at these restaurants.

Tomorrow I'm going back to LA to think about whether I should really move to SF or not... but I don't have much time to wrap and ship my stuff to move out of my current place in LA.

What should I do?

  1. The only thing worth eating at Izumiya is the modern yaki, sadly. The only place I loved in the Bay Area, Katana-ya in El Cerrito is now Korean owned. Service is great but oishikunai.

  2. I read the same comment about Izumiya on Yelp afterward. Izumiya is originally an okonomi-yaki (modern yaki) place, I understand. One reviewer said that their modern-yaki is good but it's got smaller!

Why aren't there good Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area? I bet it'll find many loyal customers up there. Is this phenomenon related to a large immigrants from Hong Kong and China?
