A new movie Contagion was released in the U.S. last weekend. The story is about a new strain of virus which is contagious to humans and very lethal, putting people and society all over the world in chaos and fear. Although the plot is far from being novel and it is something you have already watched elsewhere (e.g., Dustin Hoffman's Outbreak in 1995), this kind of viral attack is still a real possible threat and relevant to us and that's why Warner Brothers green-lighted this movie, I guess.
This is a movie trailer:
BUT, one of the first few victims of the virus in the movie is this Japanese businessman (the Asian guy in the photo on the left).
Hello to the management of Warner Brothers? This is the 21st century. There is no such Japanese businessman who looks like the exaggerated Japanese neighbor played by Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's!
I am really surprised and offended to see this outdated cliche image of a Japanese businessman in the movie. And I AM SICK OF IT!!!!
The Hollywood movie studios understand the Japanese market is the second largest after the U.S., but they ask a question like why they are losing more and more market share in Japan (and other Asian countries like Korea) against local movie makers. This is WHY! As long as the Hollywood movie studios keep putting this kind of racial cliche image in their movies, they will keep alienating international audiences. And, they seem never to get it! I guess there're no Asian executives in Hollywood movie studios...
