Kei Nishikori

U.S. Open started last weekend. Every year around this time (before Labor Day) I regret that I didn't go to U.S. Open when I lived in NY. I did go to Times Square on New Year's Eve, Macy's Thanksgiving parade, 4th of July fireworks on East River, and Fire Island in summer, but not U.S. Open. (But I feel I don't have to do those things again. There're so many people in muggy or brutally cold weather at these events. Almost anything in Manhattan is overrated in my opinion.)

That said, I wish if I went to this year's U.S. Open because last weekend I got a text message from a friend of mine, Brian, living in Queens, saying that he watched Nishikori at the qualifying match.

Kei Nishikori is a rising star in the Japanese media (and for Brian who likes Asians and Lations).

Brian was excited about Kei's reach of U.S. Open's final qualifying round more than I was. He even sent me a text to tell me that he saw Kei's six packs when he was wiping off his sweat in the court. Oh how easy it is to please Brian....

Kei's is mere 20 years old.... wow.

I'm more curious about these guys...

季節感・喪失

夏もそろそろ終わりだねー。来週月曜はレイバーデイ（Labor Day）でこちらは3連休。これが終わると、学校が一斉に始まって、職場もバケーション・ムードが下火に。そしてこの時期、NYではUSオープン・テニスが始まって、まだまだ残暑が厳しい中、ハリケーンがやってくる初秋の季節になってくる・・・。

と季節感のあることを書いてみたけど、LAって、5月ごろから全然天気が変わってない・・・。特にこの夏は冷夏で（日本在住の人には申し訳ないんだけど）寒い日々が続いてるんだよね。毎晩、掛け布団がないと寒くて風邪引いちゃう。USオープンを見てても、アナウンサーが、「今の気温は97度です。この猛暑・炎天下でのプレーは過酷です」なんて汗だくのプレーヤーを映し出すけど、窓から冷気が入り込んできて手足が寒いLAにあっては想像するのが難しい対岸の火事。

Andy Murrayが気になる。よく見ると歯並び悪いし、細身で、トム・ハンクスに似てる・・・。けど、角度によってはかっこいいかも。やっぱ、スポーツ選手って、それだけでかっこよく見えるよね。

Richard Gasquetもかっこいいべ～

NY在住の友達ブライアンは、錦織選手の試合を見に行ってきたんだと。クルム・伊達は負けちゃったけど、錦織君は2回戦を勝ち抜いてqualifying roundの最終戦まで来てるってね。ブライアンも応援し甲斐があったね。ブライアン、こういうアジア人が好きらしい。そりゃー、プロ・テニス選手だもんねぇ～。より一層かっこよく見えるわな。でも、錦織君って、今、20歳だっけ？ブライアン、犯罪～。

NYといえば、今、マンハッタンにベッドバグ（bed bug）が大量発生してて大変なんだと。その名の通り、ベッドに潜む害虫で、夜な夜なおきだしては人の手足に噛み付いて血をすうらしい。今のところ、病原菌を媒介しないという実験結果が出てるらしいけど、生態がよくわからないらしく、完全駆除ができないんだと。

住宅、ホテルに関係なく、マンハッタンに大発生してるらしく、旅行者がそれをまた拡散するから、LAやその他都市でも報告されてるらしい。怖い～。神経質な人は、ホテルにチェックインしても、スーツケースはトイレでしか広げないとか、ベッドカバーを引き剥がして、bed bugがいないか確認する人もいるとか。

東海岸はハリケーンの被害もあるから大変だよねぇ。せっかくの3連休も、ハリケーン・アールが大接近するとか。初秋のハリケーンとか台風とか、季節感あるよねぇ～。懐かしい。ま、大きな被害が出ないことを祈ってます。

ホント、季節感がない南カリフォルニア。今度の3連休は、自分でなんとか季節感を醸し出さないとなぁ。何かいい案ないかなぁ～。（少し涼しげな感じが出るようにブログのデザインを変更してみました・・・）

Japanese television

The Internet makes it possible to watch Japanese television real time. There's free software called "Key Hole TV." Here're instructions in English for how to download the software. The quality is low but you can watch the major network television (and listen to radio stations) in Japan for real time from anywhere in the world as long as you have access to the Internet, which is pretty cool.

But there're small, low-budget television companies in Japan that are not on the list of Key Hole TV. MX TV is one of them. I love a couple of shows on MX TV because they are so indie-spirited, wild (controversial) and funny. One program is called "Goji ni Muchuu" (Absorbed in 5pm).

It's a live news and entertainment show, sort of mixture of headline news, TMZ, and View.

One of the anchor persons is Taro Itsumi, a son of a late national announcer, Masataka Itsumi. Taro went to college in Massachusetts. He's going to become 38 years old this year but he's hot!

On Mondays, the show have two panels, Matsuko Delux (left) and Fumie Wakamatsu (right). They are soooo funny.

As you can see (maybe), Matsuko is a transvestite/cross-dresser gay. She has become very popular on Japanese television recently, and she was voted as one of the most popular columnists. She makes brave and unusual comments on daily news and gossip that point out deep truth below the surface. And of course, she makes a lot of gay remarks.

I think Matsuko likes Taro because she enjoys asking tough questions to Taro on live television. For example, Matsuko asked Taro, "How many women have you slept so far?" Matsuko also nagged with a comment like "I know you (Taro) is used as okazu (object of desire) by many gays for their masturbation!"

筋肉留学

なかやまきんに君が筋肉留学しにＬＡに来てるんだって。

筋肉留学かぁ・・・・

まぁアメリカの中ではＬＡが一番筋肉鍛えるには向いてる場所かもね。シュワルツネッガーもここで有名になったし。

こういう筋肉体質のアジア人って、アメリカ人ゲイの間でも人気あるよ。

顔はあんまり関係ないみたいね、身体が筋肉質であれば。意外と（？）こういうお顔立ちが当たり障りなくて打率は高いかもねぇ～。アメリカ人の間にある「アジア人顔」のイメージを裏切らない顔立ちが「当たる」みたいよ。

僕も股下外交しにどこか行きたいなぁ～

Malibu vs. Santa Monica

Today I joined a gay social group to a beach in Malibu. The beach was stunning. The water is much clearer than Santa Monica's, though the two places are not so far away from each other (like 30-minute drive). I wonder why the water quality is so different. Oh I saw many hot surfers along PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) too. Yum...

After outing at the beach, I went to Malibu Lumber Yard, a new shopping center that opened in April 2009. It's a year old but still looks new. I like three aquarium tanks. I saw a straight Japanese couple shopping. Yes, we Japanese love to check out new things!

I saw several gay people/couples shopping and lounging here too, but shoppers were mostly families - especially with little kids/babies. I guess not many gay people live out in Malibu. Aren't there gay college students at Pepperdine?

Last weekend, I coincidentally discovered a new shopping center in Santa Monica, Santa Monica Place, which just opened a week before. I went to SaMo to attend a free live concert event there. Santa Monica Place is much bigger than Malibu Lumber Yard and has more high-end boutique shops like Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Michael Kors, Burburry, etc. I was impressed by its grand atmosphere and chic architecture but at the same time was deeply disappointed because most shops are only for female shoppers. I hardly saw clothing stores for men. The rooftop food court looks more interesting, though.

Speaking of shops for guys, I noticed one thing - at the Nike store.

Its mannequin has got a crotch!

Since when has Nike been using gay appeal? Love it, though.

マリンブルー・マリブー

数週間前にデビューしたゲイ・グループと一緒にマリブーのビーチへ行ってきたぞ。サンタモニカから車で30分ほど北上したところがマリブー。たった30分しか離れてないのに、水の透明度が格段に違う。サンタモニカは市内から川の汚濁が流れ込んでるからなのか、人があまりに多いからか、水が濁ってんだよね～。だけどマリブーは透明度が高い。水がグリーンっぽいブルーできれいー。

ＬＡ市内からはパッシフィック・コースト・ハイウェイ（通称PCH）を北上して行くんだけど、その道すがら、いるわいるわ、半裸のサーファーたち。波乗りを楽しんで、ウェットスーツのお着替えを路駐した車の傍でしてるんですねぇ～。「車窓の眺め」が最高だったぁ。往復で半ケツのサーファーを何人拝んだことだろう。

このゲイ・グループの集まり、前回は20名ほどだったのに、今回は40名以上集まってた。ま、半分はレズビアンだけどさ。。。何人か友好的な人が挨拶がてらお菓子や果物を勧めにきてくれたけど、ほとんどの人たちは知り合い同士でおしゃべり。だけど40人もいてイケテル人が一人もいないって、どういうこと？

しかも、僕とジェームスが砂浜に座ってランチを広げ始めたとき、僕らの隣に座ってきた白人オヤジ。どっかで見たことある顔・・・と思ったら、チャットルームでよく見かけるライス・クイーンだった（彼のチャット・プロフィールにはヌーＯ写真が掲載されてる）・・・。しかも、必ずと言っていいほどチャットで声かけられるけど、僕はかたくなに無視してる人だった・・・。40代後半のアジア人（パートナーだとか）と一緒に来てたけど、この白人オヤジが僕に握手を求めてきて名前を聞いてきたときも、パートナーのアジア人は僕を無視。まー、よくあることですわな。

景色は綺麗でビーチの散策も楽しんだけど、ソーシャルな面では退屈な集まりですた。。。僕がもっぱら眺めてたのは、獲物を求めてダイブするペリカンと、残飯をつつくウミネコ、そして隣で日光浴してる彼女連れのストレート・ジョック・・・。ジェームスも退屈したようで、まだたくさん人が残ってる午後3時過ぎに早々と退散したのでした。

日がまだ高くて時間もあったので、先日紹介したマリブーのショッピングセンターMalibu Lumber Yardへ行ってみることにした。

日曜なのにあまり混んでなくてよかった～（あ、お店にとっては良くないけど）。マリブー的には混んでる方だったのかなぁ？

やっぱ、水槽が見ごたえあった～。「ドリーン」を発見。

やっぱ木材がふんだんに使われてて、今でも木の香りがした。チェアに座ってリゾート気分を満喫。DJもいて、ノリのいい曲をスピンしてた。

ゲイも何組かショッピングに来てたけど、客層の半分は家族連れだった。しかも、小さな子持ちが多かった気がした。日本人の若いカップルも一組見かけたぞ。

そしてくつろいだのが、このCrumbs Cake Shop。手作りカップケーキが売りのお店だけど、コーヒーがとびきり美味しかった。カップケーキは、見た目かわいいけど、やっぱ日本人の舌には甘すぎ・こってりすぎ。

ちなみに、このマネキンは、先日、サンタモニカのショッピングセンター内で見かけたナイキショップのもの。股間がちゃんとあって、「ゲイやわぁ～」と思ったので撮っておいた。ついにナイキもイメージをゲイ路線にしたみたいやでー。

今、エミー賞をテレビで見てる～

Japanese/Asian Gay Movies

There are many bad gay movies but there are good ones too. I haven't seen good Japanese/Asian gay movies recently, but my all-time favorites are:

Okoge (1992) - A story about a fag hag who befriends with a Japanese gay couple. She is an unrealistic character but the movie depicts then Japanese gay scene well, though it's a bit old...

Water Boys - There's only one gay-ish character but the movie itself is very gay in that Japanese high school boys practice synchronized swimming in speedo. There's a sequel because the original one was so popular among women (and some men).

Platonic Sex - Based on an autobiographical novel by Ai Iijima. She was a former porn star who later became a celebrity on TV in Japan. The story is not about gay men but one of her ex-boyfriends works as a gay hustler. I was fascinated by an underworld in Tokyo that I have never seen. You will witness how some young Japanese, who run away from home and come to a big city like Tokyo, end up getting involved in sex business to survive and to find love.

Other non-Japanese gay movies that I like:

The Wedding Banquet (1993) - An Asian-Caucasian gay couple in Manhattan tries to disguise their relationship with a help of a Chinese woman, when Taiwanese guy's parents visit them in NY. Ang Lee must be gay!
Under One Roof - A low budget, not-so-good movie, but at least it's about an Asian gay man in the U.S. This one-sheet photo is so misleading, though. The Asian guy plays a top in the movie, but this picture leaves us an impression that the white guy is a top, doesn't it?

Cut Sleeve Boys - I saw this movie on Logo a couple of weeks ago. It's about two Chinese British gays in their 30's who try to find true love and to accept aging self in London.

Happy Together - I saw this movie in a theater. I have been wanting to visit Buenos Aires since then but haven't been able to... I was shocked to learn about Leslie Cheung who played one of the main actors in the movie jumped off the building many years later.
