Malibu vs. Santa Monica

Today I joined a gay social group to a beach in Malibu. The beach was stunning. The water is much clearer than Santa Monica's, though the two places are not so far away from each other (like 30-minute drive). I wonder why the water quality is so different. Oh I saw many hot surfers along PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) too. Yum...

After outing at the beach, I went to Malibu Lumber Yard, a new shopping center that opened in April 2009. It's a year old but still looks new. I like three aquarium tanks. I saw a straight Japanese couple shopping. Yes, we Japanese love to check out new things!

I saw several gay people/couples shopping and lounging here too, but shoppers were mostly families - especially with little kids/babies. I guess not many gay people live out in Malibu. Aren't there gay college students at Pepperdine?


Last weekend, I coincidentally discovered a new shopping center in Santa Monica, Santa Monica Place, which just opened a week before. I went to SaMo to attend a free live concert event there. Santa Monica Place is much bigger than Malibu Lumber Yard and has more high-end boutique shops like Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Michael Kors, Burburry, etc. I was impressed by its grand atmosphere and chic architecture but at the same time was deeply disappointed because most shops are only for female shoppers. I hardly saw clothing stores for men. The rooftop food court looks more interesting, though.

Speaking of shops for guys, I noticed one thing - at the Nike store.

Its mannequin has got a crotch!

Since when has Nike been using gay appeal? Love it, though.

マリンブルー・マリブー

数週間前にデビューしたゲイ・グループと一緒にマリブーのビーチへ行ってきたぞ。サンタモニカから車で30分ほど北上したところがマリブー。たった30分しか離れてないのに、水の透明度が格段に違う。サンタモニカは市内から川の汚濁が流れ込んでるからなのか、人があまりに多いからか、水が濁ってんだよね～。だけどマリブーは透明度が高い。水がグリーンっぽいブルーできれいー。



ＬＡ市内からはパッシフィック・コースト・ハイウェイ（通称PCH）を北上して行くんだけど、その道すがら、いるわいるわ、半裸のサーファーたち。波乗りを楽しんで、ウェットスーツのお着替えを路駐した車の傍でしてるんですねぇ～。「車窓の眺め」が最高だったぁ。往復で半ケツのサーファーを何人拝んだことだろう。

このゲイ・グループの集まり、前回は20名ほどだったのに、今回は40名以上集まってた。ま、半分はレズビアンだけどさ。。。何人か友好的な人が挨拶がてらお菓子や果物を勧めにきてくれたけど、ほとんどの人たちは知り合い同士でおしゃべり。だけど40人もいてイケテル人が一人もいないって、どういうこと？

しかも、僕とジェームスが砂浜に座ってランチを広げ始めたとき、僕らの隣に座ってきた白人オヤジ。どっかで見たことある顔・・・と思ったら、チャットルームでよく見かけるライス・クイーンだった（彼のチャット・プロフィールにはヌーＯ写真が掲載されてる）・・・。しかも、必ずと言っていいほどチャットで声かけられるけど、僕はかたくなに無視してる人だった・・・。40代後半のアジア人（パートナーだとか）と一緒に来てたけど、この白人オヤジが僕に握手を求めてきて名前を聞いてきたときも、パートナーのアジア人は僕を無視。まー、よくあることですわな。

景色は綺麗でビーチの散策も楽しんだけど、ソーシャルな面では退屈な集まりですた。。。僕がもっぱら眺めてたのは、獲物を求めてダイブするペリカンと、残飯をつつくウミネコ、そして隣で日光浴してる彼女連れのストレート・ジョック・・・。ジェームスも退屈したようで、まだたくさん人が残ってる午後3時過ぎに早々と退散したのでした。

日がまだ高くて時間もあったので、先日紹介したマリブーのショッピングセンターMalibu Lumber Yardへ行ってみることにした。

日曜なのにあまり混んでなくてよかった～（あ、お店にとっては良くないけど）。マリブー的には混んでる方だったのかなぁ？


やっぱ、水槽が見ごたえあった～。「ドリーン」を発見。


やっぱ木材がふんだんに使われてて、今でも木の香りがした。チェアに座ってリゾート気分を満喫。DJもいて、ノリのいい曲をスピンしてた。


ゲイも何組かショッピングに来てたけど、客層の半分は家族連れだった。しかも、小さな子持ちが多かった気がした。日本人の若いカップルも一組見かけたぞ。

そしてくつろいだのが、このCrumbs Cake Shop。手作りカップケーキが売りのお店だけど、コーヒーがとびきり美味しかった。カップケーキは、見た目かわいいけど、やっぱ日本人の舌には甘すぎ・こってりすぎ。


ちなみに、このマネキンは、先日、サンタモニカのショッピングセンター内で見かけたナイキショップのもの。股間がちゃんとあって、「ゲイやわぁ～」と思ったので撮っておいた。ついにナイキもイメージをゲイ路線にしたみたいやでー。

There are many bad gay movies but there are good ones too. I haven't seen good Japanese/Asian gay movies recently, but my all-time favorites are:

• Okoge (1992) - A story about a fag hag who befriends with a Japanese gay couple. She is an unrealistic character but the movie depicts then Japanese gay scene well, though it's a bit old...

• Water Boys - There's only one gay-ish character but the movie itself is very gay in that Japanese high school boys practice synchronized swimming in speedo. There's a sequel because the original one was so popular among women (and some men).

• Platonic Sex - Based on an autobiographical novel by Ai Iijima. She was a former porn star who later became a celebrity on TV in Japan. The story is not about gay men but one of her ex-boyfriends works as a gay hustler. I was fascinated by an underworld in Tokyo that I have never seen. You will witness how some young Japanese, who run away from home and come to a big city like Tokyo, end up getting involved in sex business to survive and to find love.

Other non-Japanese gay movies that I like:

• The Wedding Banquet (1993) - An Asian-Caucasian gay couple in Manhattan tries to disguise their relationship with a help of a Chinese woman, when Taiwanese guy's parents visit them in NY. Ang Lee must be gay!
• Under One Roof - A low budget, not-so-good movie, but at least it's about an Asian gay man in the U.S. This one-sheet photo is so misleading, though. The Asian guy plays a top in the movie, but this picture leaves us an impression that the white guy is a top, doesn't it?

• Cut Sleeve Boys - I saw this movie on Logo a couple of weeks ago. It's about two Chinese British gays in their 30's who try to find true love and to accept aging self in London.

• Happy Together - I saw this movie in a theater. I have been wanting to visit Buenos Aires since then but haven't been able to... I was shocked to learn about Leslie Cheung  who played one of the main actors in the movie jumped off the building many years later.

I haven't had a chance to see the below Japanese gay-themed movies but am interested.

• Hatachi no Binetsu (means '20-year-old with slight fever')

• Twinkle (Kirakira Hikaru) 

• Boys Love

• Hush

• La maison de Himiko

Keep Surfing

ドイツでリバーサーフィンが流行ってるらしい。テレビ情報。

イケメン・サーファー、クイリン・ローレダー（Quirin Rohleder）が人気らしく、テレビにも登場。やっぱイケメンは得だねぇ～。


横顔がかっこえぇぇ。ま、金髪だけど、あんまりドイツ人っぽくない感じがすき。彼のビデオコレクションがここで見られるみたいよ。


クイリンの写真を探してたら、他のリバー・サーファーの写真を発見。エイス・ブーチャンだって。名前がブーチャン（Buchan）、ってふざけてる。。。（ブーキャンって発音かも？）


エイスは友達二人とドイツ・スペインへ行ってきたそうな。目的はリバーサーフィン。彼ら自身はアメリカ人かオーストラリア人らしいんだけど、この人たちのほうがよっぽど北ドイツ人って顔してるべー。


特にこの左側のジェイ・トンプソンっつー友人なんて、超ゲルマン顔。名前はワスピーだけどさ。やっぱ、あの辺りは血が混ざってんのかね。


このブロンド3人でドイツ旅行してたら、現地の人にもドイツ人に見られるよね、きっと。南ドイツの人からしたら、こいつら絶対北ドイツかスイスから来たと思われるはず。


ミュンヘンではやっぱりビール飲んだみたいね。


あと、やっぱヌーディスト天国ドイツだけあって、リバーサーフィンをヌードでやってる人たちもいるらしい。素朴な疑問。なんでドイツ人とか大陸ヨーロッパ人（特に北の方）ってヌード好きが多いの？


こういうサーファージョックがヌードになればいいのにね・・・。

一夫一夫/一婦一婦制ってどう？

ゲイ2,493人にこの質問をしたら、こんな結果が出たみたい。

これは、単に付き合うっていう関係ではなくて、結婚する場合についての質問。結婚したいって思うほど好きな人で、実際にその人と結婚するんだったら、僕も68％の人と同じ意見だなぁ～。でも、10年、20年と結婚生活を続けて、その先に何があるかは未知の世界・・・。そうなったら、17％の人の意見に流れるかな。

最近、殊に「ボーイフレンドはいるけどオープンな関係だから、セＯレ募集中」っていう人が増えてる気がする。なんか迷惑・・・・。まー、ステューだって、結婚してるけど浮気してるわけで、、、。

既婚者ばかりと付き合う癖がある女性が言ってたのが、「いいなって思う男性って、みんな取られちゃってる」ってこと。これって一理ある。あと、これに僕が意見を付け足すとしたら、「かっこよくって、でも独り身って人は、絶対、なにかしら性格上の欠陥がある」ってこと。

本題から逸れてしまいましたが・・・皆さんはどう思います？

マリブーとラスベガス

サンタモニカのショッピングセンターがオープンしたのが先週。

そしたら今日メールで、マリブーの高級ショッピングセンターThe Malibu Lumber Yardからディスカウント・セールのプロモーションが来てた。先着20名は、全ての買い物が25％オフ、その他全員一律10％オフだと。ＤＪも呼ぶわ、無料シャンペンサービスもあるわで、奪われたサンタモニカから集客を図ろうという狙い。

このショッピングセンターができたのも、不況の真っ只中の、昨年春（2009年4月18 日）。だけど今週末のプロモーションのタイミングは、サンタモニカのショッピングセンターに、宣戦布告っていう感じだ～。でもマジでオープンのタイミングが悪すぎじゃない？ま、計画があがったのがバブル絶頂期で、建設に２、３年かけてたら、オープンしたのが不況真っ只中だった、っつーことなんだろうけどさ。



名前にLumberってあるように、こっちは木材をふんだんに使ったデザインみたいだね。いかにもビーチリゾートという雰囲気。


水槽もあったりしてマリーン。


場所が場所だけに、やっぱセレブのお買い物好きが来るみたいねぇ～。じゃー、今度はマリブーのショッピングセンターに有名人を見つけに行ってこようかな・・・。（買い物目的じゃないけど。）


そして、ウェストハリウッドにある有名ゲイバーThe Abbeyが、ラスベガスに進出という記事も発見。バーではなく、海岸のない砂漠のど真ん中にThe Abbey Beachを始めたんだと。Vdara Hotel & Spaにあるプール（の一部？）を、先週の日曜から9月26日まで、全日曜日はThe Abbeyの貸切にするというイベントらしい。



夏もそろそろ終盤に始まったこのイベント。夏の消費合戦の締めくくりに、一般観光客が減り始める時期、夏のバケーションから戻ってきたLAやその近郊のゲイたちの財布の紐を緩めさせる、間髪入れないタイミングは計算ずくだね。

Why are there more young gay Asian and older Caucasian couples?

This is not just my subjective impression given that there are other people's rants about this phenomenon. (Here's a crude opinion.) There are many opinions out there but my theory is because there are more submissive gay Asian men. Older gay men mind such Asian less than younger ones, maybe. Hmmm, that's not really true, though. I have been approached by quite a few young guys too -- sometimes too young. I'd call them "Bel Ami" types, i.e., twinks who are into other twinks. I have also noticed that there are many (yes MANY!) Asian guys who are into other Asians in here Southern California. There may be more sticky rice here than Asian men who are into other ethnicities.

Regarding older white guys, some of them used to lead a straight life, e.g., married, used to date with girls, not out at all, etc., and they finally came out in their late 40's or older. Such people may find younger, boyish, submissive gays more attractive. (In this sense, more bi guys may tend to find gay Asian men attractive.) As for young gay Asian, their supply may surpass demand among the main stream gay market in the U.S. So it's natural that some of them find demand among the elderly (and some of them may be generous, and definitely being white bears some social superiority as the dominant race in the U.S.). So this phenomenon stems from pure supply and demand.... (Some question why most gay Asian date with white and other Asian. Does anyone have response to it?)

That being said, I see more diverse couples in California. In Midwest and East Coast, I saw more "traditional" older white and younger Asian couples. But in California, there are really different types of combinations. Young white/old Asian, Asian/Black, Asian/Latino, and so many Asian/Asian couples. That's why I love West Coast!

Which Gay Asian?

When browsing people's chat profiles online, I notice that people have their own ideas about what gay Asian men should look like. I have read these phrases:

A: "Into ethnic guys. Black, Asian, Latino, all good to me"

B: "Asian and slim Latinos only"

C: "Smooth Asian bottom only - no shaved body please"

D: "looking for Masculine/DL top Asian"

E: "into Eastern Asian - northern Chinese, Korean, and Japanese"

F: "No old, fat, fem, or Asian. No offense. That's just my preference"

"A" is a typical "Benetton" guy. He - a white guy - loves anything ethnic. He makes love with people from all over the world except for white guys who may remind him of himself. 

"B" guy has some specific idea about gay Asian men. His phrase sounds like there are no fat Asian!

"C" is def by a guy who's into Asian twink. He may be fantasizing about a hairless adolescent body. Oftentimes, he is a "daddy" type.

Oh, and I feel sorry about "D" guy. There are so few masculine top Asian men in the world.... I think. When you go to gay bars, pride festivals, and gay Asian/API social groups and the like, how many masculine top-looking Asian guys do you see? There's a study saying that there are, in general, more bottom gays (including versatile) than top gays anyway.

"E" guys have deep understanding of Asian culture and sees difference among Asian men. He is more likely to have been to those Asian countries and cultivated his taste of those Asian men. He often speaks one or more of those languages.

And the "F" guy sees Asian in the same category as being fat and fem. Ouch. You can lose weight and can do something to boost your masculinity but you can't change your ethnicity! What annoys me most is that he spent extra effort to write this disclaimer. I have preference about men. But I don't spell out who I do NOT want to hear from. Especially on the Internet where people search by key words, typing a word "Asian" in your profile or ad will draw traffic from Asian men themselves (me!) and those who are looking for Asian. I'm looking for Asian-friendly people, but my search results often include those who are the least fan of Asian. What a bummer. "F" guy does not understand how the Internet works and definitely deserves F!

All from A to F, however, seem to connote certain images about gay Asian men. Some of my gay friends - Caucasian men who're into Asian - say that being into Asian is almost regarded as fetishism. That's why many of them do not want to admit that they're into Asian men with their non-Asian friends -- at least until they get really old and have nothing to lose any more. There seems to be such a prejudice against interracial straight couples too. But a thing is that gay Asian men are not regarded as "fetishists" by liking white, black, latino guys so much -- at least in the U.S. In contrast, Japanese gays call other Japanese gays, who are into white guys, gaisen which means "specializing in foreigners" and tend to see them fetishists. 

Is having sexual preference to ethnic minority fetishism?

At any rate, I'm glad that there are gay guys in this country who are seeking Asian lovers, bf, partners, or whatever you call it. But I'm still confused about your images toward gay Asian men. I have a couple of chat profiles which do not show my clear facial pictures for privacy. I only send my clear pictures to people who I have a decent conversation with and see a possibility to meet in person. Guess what happens? When I see them in person, I often get complement like "Oh you look much better than your pictures." About half of the other times when I share my clear face pictures, however, people are disappointed and say I'm not what they're looking for. Their profiles say they're looking for Asian. I am Asian. My height/weight/age ranges fit their preferences. I'm not drug addict or do not have any bugs. We had a good conversation. But still my face picture is definitely not it. WTF?

People who are into gay Asian men do not have right language to express their desire obviously! Just saying "I'm looking for Asian" does not bring YOUR Asian men! It's basically the same as "I'm looking for gay men." That'll bring all kinds of gay men. You have to be more specific and need to learn what kind of Asian you're aroused by! I know there are philanthropists who'd love whatever Asian, but most of you are not. And there are a variety of gay Asian men.

ジムでスピンしながらテレビのメジャーリーグを見てた。もちろん目的は物色。そうじゃなかったら野球なんて見ない。

テキサス・レインジャーズにいい選手をみっけた。

ピッチャーのC.J. Wilson。めちゃカッコイイ。アシュトン・クッチャーっぽい？




でもテレビに映るのはほとんどが遠目で、彼の顔は良く見えない。それでも僕の目を引いた理由は、彼のオシリなのだ。これは遠くからでもわかるほどのバブルバット。特に、彼の投球の姿勢が、片足を高く振り上げるから、余計に臀部が発達するんじゃないかなぁ～。

もう一人は、今日、ホームランを放ったJosh Hamilton。


彼も体がいいんっすよねぇ～。こういう足が長くてバランスの取れた身体Love。


でもー、彼はかーなーりーの遊び人の様子。こんな写真がネットで流れてるー。

刺青がすごいーーー。ダメ、刺青いれすぎの身体って・・・。


Josh Hamiltonって麻薬の前科もあるらしく、あやうく選手生命が絶たれるところだったんだってさ。こういうライフスタイルを見ると、わかるね。


でも彼って、こんなブロンドの奥さんと結婚して娘がいるんだと・・・。こういうのを旦那にするのも大変だねぇ・・・。やっぱ、プロの選手で身体・筋肉が巨大、それゆえ人並み以上に男性ホルモン・テスタストロンが体中を駆け巡ってる人は、パンツがすぐずり落ちちゃう生活になっちゃうんだねぇ・・・。あ、プロ選手といえばタイガーウッズ、ついに離婚したね。
